January 9-14th announcements
Monday 9th: No formal practice because of the High School All Star Match. Optional practice for 3-9th graders at 3:00 to 4:30 including mat set up at 3:00. This is optional only because I want the wrestlers at the All Star Dual if possible. So after school will be homework time. High School All Star Match at UCCU center on UVU campus starts at 7:00 PM. $10.00 adults, $8.00 students, Under 6 free. Immediate Family Pass $45. MMHS has 11 South Utah County wrestlers and 9 Champions Wrestling Club members competing in the All Star Duals this year. I have to be there early but if you want to car pool, meet at the North East corner of the MJH parking lot at 6:00 PM.
Tuesday 10th: Normal practice for all age groups PreK-9th grade including challenge matches for Cedar City Duals.
Wednesday 11th: Wrestle Till You Drop for 3-9gh graders at MJH. Warm up at 4:45, wrestling at 5:30. Mettle Wrestling Club (three JH programs) and Springville JH are invited.
Thursday 12th: Normal practice for 3-9th grade. MMHS @ Home 7:00 vs Timpanogos High School. 4 youth wrestlers with T-shirts on free for every one paying adult. Also a very exciting night for the entire club at UVU. UVU will host Boise State, a recent national powerhouse team that we upset two years ago. Our entire club is invited to be there at 5:00 to join Mettle, Mt. View, Wasatch, Pride and many other clubs are meeting at 7:00 in the UCCU center for a huge game of shirt tag and other wrestling games. Then as a group of youth wrestlers, we hope to fill every seat and cheer as loud as possible for our Wolverines to tear up the Broncos. ADMISSION IS FREE for all youth wrestlers in the state. Parents do have to pay. I will fax our lineup for free entry that night. I will be coaching the High School team so don’t wait for me. Car pool to UVU will leave MJH parking lot at 5:30. This is for all ages.
Also Thursday the Syracuse Tiny Titans Pre-registration closes at 5:30 PM.
Friday 13th: Regular practice for 3-9th.
Saturday 14th: Two tournaments going on. For PreK – 3rd Grade the tournament is “Clash of the Tiny Titans” at Syracuse HS. Pre-Registration on Trackwrestling.com ends on Thursday at 5:30 PM. Weigh ins will be Tuesday night at practice or Thursday during JH practice times. Flyer is here. For 4th-9th graders we will be traveling to Cedar City Duals all day. Car pool meets at 5:00 AM and leaves at 5:15 AM to drive to Cedar City caravan style. There will be both a dual meet tournament with two Champions Club teams plus an individual beginners tournament for those who don’t make the dual team. So all 4-9th graders are invited to come. Or, they may also go to Syracuse with the younger athletes.
Two items of concern for Saturday: Entry Fees. The Dual tournaments are not pre-registration so I am paying $10.00 per boy to compete in these tournaments. At Delta I ended up paying $170.00 of my own money out and at South Summit I paid $110.00. I am fine doing this if there is a need, but please talk to me about it. I think some of the wrestlers are sent with the money to pay me for their entry and then spend it on concessions or forget to pay me. So please be courteous on this. I will not ever keep a wrestler from competing if they can’t afford to do it, but I also don’t want to be taken advantage of. It adds up quickly. The second item is car pool. In 12 years of coaching Jr. High wrestling, I have never had a day when there weren’t enough seats to car pool all the wrestlers who wanted to go… Until last week. I had 18 boys without seat belts. So I ended up waking up a friend and he drove, I drove and my wife drove. I think that after so many years of very supportive parents always showing up and not being needed, we all decided on the same morning that we wouldn’t be needed again. A perfect storm that ended up being a difficulty on me and my family (no room for my own kids). This week is a particularly sensitive week because this is the last of the three weekends that I will be coaching the high school team (so I won’t be at Cedar City this weekend).
Those not attending either Syracuse or Cedar City may want to drop in to watch The Rumble at UVU UCCU center. The toughest and biggest HS tournament in Utah. 64 teams.
